Ushiro Kesa Gatame, translated as 'Reverse Scarf Hold,' is a pinning technique that involves controlling the opponent from their back while applying pressure to their chest and shoulder. It is a variation of the traditional Kesa Gatame (Scarf Hold) but with the controller positioned behind the opponent instead of to their side. To perform Ushiro Kesa Gatame, establish a position behind the opponent, with your chest against their back. Wrap one arm around their chest, securing a firm grip on their far arm or shoulder. Use your other arm to control their near arm or to maintain balance. Your legs should be positioned to prevent the opponent from rolling or escaping. Apply pressure by driving your chest forward and using your arms to control their upper body. From this position, you can maintain control, set up transitions to other positions, or attack with submissions such as chokes or arm locks.
