The Can Opener is a powerful neck crank applied from within an opponent's closed guard. The attacker interlaces their fingers behind the opponent's head and forcefully pulls it down towards their own chest, flexing the opponent's cervical spine. This creates immense pressure on the neck and can be used to force the opponent to open their guard or to submit them directly. It is illegal in IBJJF tournaments and many other competitions due to the high risk of serious neck injury.
