Yoko Wakare, meaning 'Side Separation,' is a sacrifice throw that involves dropping to your side while pulling the opponent forward and using your leg to block their movement, causing them to fall. It is often used as a counter to an opponent's attack or when they are moving forward. To perform Yoko Wakare, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. As they step forward or attempt to off-balance you, quickly drop to your side while extending your leg across the front of the opponent's body, blocking their legs. Simultaneously, use your grips to pull the opponent forward and downward, disrupting their balance and causing them to fall over your extended leg. The combination of the leg block, the pulling action, and the sacrifice motion creates an effective takedown. Although this technique is mostly associated with Judo it is sometimes applied in Jiu-Jitsu.
