Shin-to-Shin Guard is a very versatile control approach using the leg. When correctly and fluidly moved, your lower base limbs will directly attack an opponent's upper legs in areas which helps the application of sweeps with strong destabilization. That makes openings more available, and that transition more reliably and often it provides defensive measures too, which help you by maintaining strong points in positioning. When initially securing the positions and movements, set by using one leg placed around your own calf (most commonly by wrapping a hook on the heel or with feet by hooking a limb, but both shins on both is a great version too when correctly utilized). During these points, your limbs offer access for your control or your next move to perform, but maintaining a grip or having your head tightly connected will help keep things closer for better management. This is important when controlling their center while off-balancing through both sweeps and limb entanglement controls, also by manipulation techniques of your torso or other areas that are accessible during the control.
