Omoplata

1 / 4
/Overview

The omoplata is a strong form of joint manipulation that targets the shoulder, typically applied from a dominant top-control position. It utilizes dynamic sweeping motion and bodyweight mechanics to multiply force. Often initiated from a guard position, the setup involves placing your leg over one of the opponent's arms, with one leg secured around their neck. Control their wrist and torso to trap them for optimal rotation. Use leg and hip extensions to maximize impact. Rotate using hip extension and drive down and extend at their shoulder. This forces the elbow joint downward while twisting the shoulder and arm, creating a dangerous angle that can lead to hyperextension or dislocation of the shoulder joint. Due to the nature of this submission, great care should be taken during training. The omoplata can also be effectively utilized to sweep an opponent, taking top position, instead of submitting them.
