Lasso Guard

1 / 4
/Overview

Lasso guard is an effective technique for maintaining control from the bottom using an offensive open guard style with your limbs. It typically involves controlling one of the opponent's arms, creating distance and making it difficult for them to transition around you. Position your foot under and around their arm, with direct grip control of both the shoulder and the arm, or via the armpit to control their limb with your feet. Use your ankles as support around theirs. This method allows for potential sweeps, limb submissions, and control of body position while preventing guard passes with minimal vulnerabilities for the lower opponent. The lasso guard is one of the more common guards used in competition and self defense. The lasso may be used in various positions such as closed guard, open guard, spider guard etc. It is worth noting the Lasso is far less effective without the gi as the primary grip usually involves gripping the sleeve.
