The rear naked choke (RNC) is a dominant blood choke commonly secured from the back mount position in grappling and combat sports. It is considered one of the most effective submissions due to its ability to quickly restrict blood flow to the brain, forcing a tap or unconsciousness. To apply the RNC, take the opponent's back and establish either a seat belt or harness position. Wrap one arm around the opponent's neck, with the forearm against their throat, and clasp your hands together or grip your bicep for added leverage. Apply pressure by squeezing your arms and driving your chest forward, effectively cutting off blood flow through the carotid arteries. This core move has become an important part of several different martial arts, not only grappling. In particular it has become frequently applied in mixed martial arts contests in which it's potency may even be amplified by striking prior to application. A well-executed RNC is difficult to escape from and can quickly end a match.
