The flower sweep is often started by controlling the opponent's posture, typically from an open guard or a half guard, using hand and foot movements as pivots of strength during positional changes. Firstly, by moving under and beside, position yourself so that you now make a grasp of both hands, usually directly into or against their hip or other related body area for maximal support during a transitioning-type sweep. As you then secure an anchor for yourself, you need to perform a simultaneous lift upward that will force them over into the sweeping position, which now requires strong and quick leg motions as their body is off base. This combination allows you an opening with both the upward pressure with the lifting movement as you quickly start pulling at the base areas while driving back on the hip areas and use body and torso as supports by moving from under their lower base quickly with a twist into that new top placement. The flower sweep may be referred to as a pendulum sweep.
