The cross collar choke is a classic gi submission that involves using the opponent's own collar to create a powerful choke. It can be applied from various positions, but mount and guard are the most common. To execute the choke, establish strong grips on opposite sides of the opponent's collar with your hands cupped around for greater control. Pull down forcefully with both hands to create a crushing action that closes off the opponent's airways at the neck, applying direct pressure to the carotid arteries. Correct application can lead to a safe and controlled submission, but incorrect or uncontrolled use carries the risk of potential harm. The cross collar choke is sometimes referred to as a X-choke.
