The Boston Crab is a submission hold that targets the spine and hips by forcing the opponent into severe lumbar hyperextension. While famous in professional wrestling, it has legitimate applications in grappling, particularly in catch wrestling and no-gi jiu-jitsu. Typically applied when the opponent is on their stomach, the attacker crosses the opponent's legs, steps over them, and sits back, pulling upwards on the legs to arch the opponent's back. It is illegal in most BJJ competitions due to being a spinal lock.
