Ura Gatame, commonly referred to as 'Rear Control' or 'Back Mount' in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is a dominant grappling position where you control the opponent from their back. Unlike traditional pinning techniques that focus on immobilizing the opponent face down, Ura Gatame emphasizes controlling the opponent's movement and attacking from their back. To establish Ura Gatame, position yourself on the opponent's back, with your chest against their back and your legs hooked around their thighs. Secure a firm grip around their torso or under their armpits, often using a 'seatbelt' grip (one arm over the shoulder and the other under the opposite armpit, with hands clasped together) or a 'body triangle' (locking your legs around the opponent's waist). From this position, you can control the opponent's movement, prevent them from escaping, and attack with various submissions, such as chokes and joint locks. Ura Gatame is considered one of the most advantageous positions in grappling, as it allows you to control and attack the opponent while minimizing their offensive options. This dominant position allows a skilled grappler to finish their opponent, force a tap and achieve victory.
