Uki Waza

akaFloating Arm Throw
1 / 1
/Overview

Uki Waza, known as the 'Floating Throw,' is a sacrifice throw that involves using your leg to block the opponent's forward movement while pulling them over your body in a floating or lifting motion. It is often used as a counter to an opponent's attack or when they are moving forward with strong momentum. To perform Uki Waza, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. As they step forward or attempt to off-balance you, quickly drop to your side while extending your leg across the front of the opponent's body, blocking their legs. Simultaneously, use your grips to pull the opponent forward and upward, lifting them slightly off the ground. Rotate your body and guide the opponent over your extended leg, causing them to fall in a floating or arcing motion. In particular this technique is used as a counter, utilising the opponents momentum against them. Uki waza is also sometimes called a 'rear sacrifice throw' and although uncommon in modern Jiu-Jitsu it may occasionally be seen in a self-defense context.
