Uki otoshi

Alternate names: Floating drop

Technique Description

Uki Otoshi, translated as 'Floating Drop,' is a subtle yet effective hand technique that relies on precise timing and body positioning rather than brute strength. It is often used as a counter to an opponent's forward movement or attack. To execute Uki Otoshi, establish a firm grip on your opponent's sleeve and collar. As they step forward or attempt to off-balance you, quickly drop your hips and extend your leg in the direction of their movement. Simultaneously, use your grips to guide them over your extended leg, causing them to lose their balance and fall forward. The key to Uki Otoshi is the 'floating' sensation created by the sudden drop and the seamless transition from defense to offense. While doing these movements ensure you also do the following, maintain control of your opponents posture using your grips while extending your leg to disrupt their balance, make use of that extension to guide your opponent over your extended leg. This is best used when you use a opponents momentum to your advantage, using this during their forward motion or attack, lastly, use a controlled dropping motion rather than a forceful throw, ensuring your partner or opponent can break their fall safely during training.
