Ude hishigi juji gatame

Alternate names: Armbar

Technique Description

Ude Hishigi Juji Gatame, commonly known as the 'Armbar,' is one of the most fundamental and widely used submission techniques in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and other grappling arts. It involves isolating one of the opponent's arms and hyperextending their elbow joint to force a submission. To perform Ude Hishigi Juji Gatame, establish a position where you can trap one of the opponent's arms between your legs, with their elbow joint positioned just above your hips. Your legs should be scissored, with one leg across the opponent's chest and the other across their head, controlling their posture and preventing them from sitting up. Secure a firm grip on the opponent's wrist or forearm with both hands. To finish the submission, bridge your hips upwards while simultaneously pulling the opponent's arm downwards, creating a hyperextension of the elbow joint. The armbar can be applied from various positions, such as the guard, mount, or side control, and it is known for its effectiveness in both gi and no-gi grappling. It is frequently used as part of combination attacks, transitioning to or from other submissions. This technique is usually taught early to beginners as it is considered relatively safe when applied correctly. Care must still be applied as forcing the submission can still cause damage to the elbow joint.
