Tani Otoshi, meaning 'Valley Drop,' is a sacrifice throw that involves dropping your body weight to one side while pulling the opponent forward and using your leg to block their movement, causing them to fall. It is often used as a counter to an opponent's forward attack or when they are moving with strong momentum. To perform Tani Otoshi, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. As they step forward or attempt to off-balance you, quickly drop your hips and body weight to one side while maintaining your grip. Simultaneously, extend your leg behind the opponent's legs, blocking their movement and disrupting their balance. Use your upper body grips to pull the opponent forward and downward, guiding them over your extended leg and to the mat. Tani otoshi is commonly performed towards the rear of an opponent. However, it is possible to use this technique to either side also. In either scenario, good grips and strong control are essential to both generate force for the takedown and to stop them from countering by circling away.
