Sumi Otoshi

akaCorner Drop
1 / 1
/Overview

Sumi Otoshi, meaning 'Corner Drop,' is a hand technique that focuses on using precise timing and body positioning to off-balance and throw the opponent. Unlike throws that rely on lifting or sweeping, Sumi Otoshi emphasizes using the opponent's momentum and a well-timed drop to the ground to execute the throw. To perform Sumi Otoshi, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. As they move forward or try to establish their balance, quickly drop your body weight to one side while pulling them in the same direction. This sudden drop and pull disrupt their balance and create an angle that makes it difficult for them to maintain their footing. The technique's effectiveness lies in its ability to use the opponent's movement against them without requiring a significant amount of lifting or sweeping.
