Sumi Gaeshi

akaCorner Reversal
1 / 1
/Overview

Sumi Gaeshi, meaning 'Corner Reversal,' is a sacrifice throw that involves using your leg to hook the opponent's leg while falling backward and rolling them over your body. It is often used as a counter to an opponent's forward movement or attack. To perform Sumi Gaeshi, establish a firm grip on the opponent's sleeve and collar. As they step forward or attempt to off-balance you, quickly drop to your back while hooking one of your legs around the opponent's leg, typically at the ankle or lower calf. Simultaneously, use your grips to pull the opponent forward and over you. The combination of the leg hook, the pulling action, and the backward rolling motion creates a powerful throw that is difficult to defend against. The effectiveness of Sumi Gaeshi relies on precise timing, a strong grip, and the ability to use the opponent's momentum to your advantage. The sumi gaeshi may also be considered a sacrifice throw or a transition, this is the foundation of techniques such as the Kani Basami.
