Sankaku Jime, commonly known as the 'Triangle Choke,' is a fundamental submission technique in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and other grappling arts. It involves using your legs to form a triangle around the opponent's neck and one arm, constricting the carotid arteries and cutting off blood flow to the brain. To perform Sankaku Jime, establish a position where you can wrap one leg around the opponent's neck and across their opposite shoulder, while trapping their arm on that same side. Use your other leg to lock the triangle by placing your foot behind the knee of the first leg or by locking your ankles together. Once the triangle is secured, squeeze your legs together while using your hands to control the opponent's head and posture. To finish the choke, pull down on the opponent's head while simultaneously lifting your hips and squeezing your legs, increasing the pressure on the carotid arteries. It can be applied from various positions, including the guard, mount, and side control. It is highly effective in both gi and no-gi grappling, the triangle is also commonly used in mixed martial arts. Along with the armbar and rear naked choke this is one of the most common submissions in combat sports.
