Obi Otoshi

akaBelt Drop
1 / 1
/Overview

Obi Otoshi, known as the 'Belt Drop,' is a hand technique that involves using the opponent's belt (obi) to facilitate the throw. It is typically executed from a close-range position where you can establish a strong grip on their belt. To perform Obi Otoshi, secure a firm grip on the opponent's belt with both hands, usually with an over-under grip. As they move forward or attempt to establish their balance, quickly drop your hips and pull their belt downwards and towards you. This action disrupts their balance and posture, making them vulnerable to a takedown. While pulling the belt, you can also use your leg to block or sweep their supporting leg, further enhancing the throw's effectiveness. It's similar in nature to the previously described Obi Tori Gaeshi, however, this requires you to sacrifice your own posture.
