Nami Juji Jime, commonly known as the 'Normal Cross Choke' or simply 'Cross Choke,' is a fundamental choking technique that involves using a standard cross grip on the opponent's collar to apply pressure to the carotid arteries and cut off blood flow to the brain. It is one of the most basic and widely used chokes in Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and other grappling arts. To perform Nami Juji Jime, establish a position on top of the opponent, such as mount or guard. With one hand, grip the opponent's collar on the opposite side of your gripping hand, with your thumb inside the collar and fingers outside. Your other hand grips the opponent's same-side collar, also with your thumb inside and fingers outside. The hands are crossed, with the standard grip (thumb inside, fingers outside) being the primary choking hand. To finish the choke, pull both collars towards each other while rotating your wrists outwards. This action tightens the collars around the opponent's neck, applying pressure to the carotid arteries and causing a blood choke. This is one of the first chokes taught to beginners and is a very important fundamental technique.
