Kata Gatame, commonly known as the 'Arm Triangle Choke' or 'Head and Arm Choke,' is a powerful submission technique that involves trapping the opponent's arm and head between your arm and shoulder, and applying pressure to constrict the carotid arteries and cut off blood flow to the brain. To perform Kata Gatame, establish a side control position on the opponent, with your chest on top of theirs. Use your arm to encircle the opponent's neck, trapping one of their arms against their own body. Your bicep should be against one side of their neck, and your forearm against the other. Secure a grip by clasping your hands together or gripping your own bicep. To finish the choke, squeeze your arms together while driving your shoulder into the opponent's neck, constricting their carotid arteries and cutting off blood flow to the brain. It is considered both a choke and a hold. The effectiveness of Kata Gatame relies on proper positioning, a tight grip, and the ability to generate enough pressure to force a submission or cause unconsciousness.
