Harai Goshi

akaSweeping Hip Throw
1 / 1
/Overview

Harai Goshi, known as the 'Sweeping Hip Throw,' is a popular and effective technique in both Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. It involves using a sweeping motion of the leg combined with a strong hip rotation to throw the opponent. To execute Harai Goshi, establish a standard grip with one hand on the opponent's sleeve and the other on their lapel. Step across their body with your lead leg, placing your hip against theirs. Simultaneously, use your other leg to sweep their supporting leg from the inside, similar to an Ouchi Gari, while rotating your hips and pulling them over your hip. The combination of the leg sweep, hip rotation, and pulling action creates a powerful throw that can be difficult to defend against. The timing of the leg sweep and hip rotation is crucial for a successful Harai Goshi.
