Wrist Lock

1 / 3
/Overview

A wrist lock is a joint manipulation technique commonly used for surprise attacks and quick takedowns in various combat arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Unlike techniques that target larger joints like the elbow or knee, a wrist lock focuses on applying pressure and torque to the smaller, more fragile joints of the wrist. This is achieved by gripping specific points such as the knuckles, fingertips, or the wrist itself to gain control. Despite their seemingly less significant nature, wrist locks can cause considerable discomfort and even injury due to the delicate ligaments in the wrist. These techniques are often performed against an already secured part of the opponent's body or as an additional security measure during a choke or limb submission. When applying a wrist lock, it is crucial to use minimal and controlled pressure, especially when training with newer partners, to avoid causing injury. The wrist lock is particularly useful in no-gi where the usual grips may not be available.
