The triangle choke, also known as 'sankaku jime,' is an iconic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission that uses the legs to constrict the opponent's neck and one arm, cutting off blood flow to the brain. It is commonly applied from the guard but can also be secured from dominant top positions. To set up the triangle choke, position one leg over the opponent's shoulder and around their neck, while controlling their other arm. Lock your legs in a triangular configuration behind their knee, trapping their head and one arm. Apply pressure by lifting your legs, pulling down on their head, and squeezing your ankles together. This constricts the carotid arteries, forcing a tap or loss of consciousness if held for too long. The triangle choke may also be used effectively in no-gi.
