The Squid Guard represents yet another approach towards an advanced or modern guard system. It is often used with grips that can utilize different parts of their apparel/clothing (most typically a lapel). This approach offers high levels of bodily and base management from lower positions, typically seen as a control area using clothing around and under your own arm. This creates a positional advantage where sweeps can now be implemented safely and smoothly, with added force from both leg extensions or arm grip/leverage, while keeping one leg free as access. To lock correctly while using the clothing/lapel in a particular or unusual set of grips, your aim should usually be to wrap one or two limbs inside that held garment, then control or trap their opposing limbs with various limb grips to stop transitions at any given time to take top dominant areas. When done perfectly, this control opens new and innovative movements when transitioning and sweeping while giving access from a more dominant form for fighters.
