Side control is a foundational and powerful dominant position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, forming the core of many grappling techniques. The top player aims to pin the opponent's torso flat on the mat while restricting their upper and lower body movement through various body mechanics, grips, and weight distribution. This is usually achieved by forcing your torso into a chest-to-chest or chest-to-side position, preventing the opponent from escaping or moving effectively. Stabilize yourself using different limb grips or positionally sound controls on their arms and legs. This pressure, combined with limb locks and grips, significantly reduces the opponent's movement, allowing you to advance your position further through various techniques, submissions, or positional switches. Knowing how to secure good control and apply effective positional attacks is crucial to this strategy.
