Scissor Sweep

1 / 3
/Overview

The scissor sweep in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a basic but incredibly effective sweeping technique used in combat. It provides positional changes that can be used from almost any guard position by utilizing well-timed base destruction techniques. Beginning from whatever guard or control type you are in or set out to start in, the first aim is grip management from here. Securing sleeves is perfect and commonly used to set up this maneuver properly with minimal or little difficulty from the opposition during its setup or execution phase; control is key when it begins, so practice as much control-based grips as possible. Position your feet as accurately and strategically as you possibly can, using hooks onto their legs, then work on getting leverage over or onto your opponent's body. As your upper grips are firm, push your chosen leg or shin aggressively while pulling forward using grips. While using the pushing of their body to use leverage off you at an angle, they will almost certainly lose their center, which in turn allows for an explosive upward motion, sweeping with your legs in the most scissor-like formation, placing them onto the floor from standing with their feet above yours in reverse. Although most commonly performed from the closed guard the scissor sweep may also be performed from the open guard or half guard positions.
