Scarf hold, or the more formal version 'Kesa Gatame,' which it takes from, is an older position widely used in traditional Japanese combat arts that has since found many uses within BJJ practices and applications. It offers great versatility and access. When executing, situate yourself using pressure points at one part of your body against their shoulders or back area, and use your leg to hold a neck-down posture to fully secure their body. Usually, the leg will secure their head area, allowing very little motion or ability to perform an escape. This effectively leaves the pinned or weaker opponent susceptible to multiple follow-up holds or positions, like the transition to the mount from top pressure or even limb traps for chokes. Scarf position can use numerous combinations of different grip types and movements, making this a fundamental position for a large variety of different attack-based positions due to the high control it provides in multiple situations. This makes it an essential skill for users.
