Outside Ashi, or 'outside ashi garami' or 'outside sankaku,' represents an entangling base that directly focuses on controlling the opponent's limb by connecting with their opposing limb. This allows for unique ways to manage balance and the overall potential in any limb-attacking games, with better access to straight ankles and leg locks. These setups are often seen in the game and require skill for application against a strong opponent from a stand-up or when the area you wish to engage in opens for usage at transition phases. It's mostly applied using controlling grip patterns, usually by looping and securing the opponent's far leg from your hips outward, which you should then tightly grip around as it moves closer to your hips. The other is also working hard in the ankles or similar area at the bottom by using similar methods of positioning but locking that from your other arm. These controlling movements then give your user control in setting up locks while still managing range effectively with an overall base control against takedown styles or passes, making it very diverse from this angle. Outside Ashi may also be referred to as the 80/20, a reference to its effectiveness.
